Product Review: Skin MD

I was so excited a few months back when the makers of Skin MD offered to send me a few samples of their lotion to try. I got a full sized bottle and a few smaller packets so I was excited.

My darling son David was just diagnosed with pretty serious eczema so I figured I would give just about anything a try. I have been pretty frustrated because I have no idea where this eczema came from but it's been getting progressively worse over time. The doctor actually suggested that I stop breastfeeding- ha! Let's just say that after all this time and LOTS of frozen milk later that is a last resort option!

So, in the middle of dermatology and allergist appointments, I decided to give it a try. As a disclaimer, I've only tried the lotion for a few weeks so here's some of my honest feedback:

Pros

Overall, I thought that the lotion was pretty good. The best thing about it is that unlike some of the other lotions I've tried, this one didn't make my son break out in any crazy rashes. He also didn't itch right away when I applied it so that's nice. The lotion doesn't really have a scent, but I guess that's the beauty of working on folks with sensitive skin. I thought that the consistency was really smooth and it certainly didn't leave that greasy feeling like the other emollients we've been using lately.
Cons
The directions call for a small amount & I found that not such a small amount could be used for even my infant son (he has eczema all over) so certainly an adult would need to use quite a bit. Online, it says that one 4oz bottle will last 1-2 months. Again, this would only be if had not such a severe case. I also found that I needed to re-apply quite a bit as his skin got dry again pretty quick. I also found the lotion to be rather light. For someone with non-sensitive skin, I like to know that I have lotion on because I feel really, I don't know, moist I guess. It was like after I tested the lotion my legs I felt much like I did before I applied the lotion. That was not such a great thing in my opinion.
Would I be a financial diva if I didn't comment on the price? A 4oz bottle costs $18 bucks so it's not cheap by any means. I can say that this far beats the $186 teeny weeny bottle of cream that one doc prescribed so I guess I can't complain.
Overall, I think that this product is best for someone with more serious skin issues. The literature suggests that the lotion really helps some severe cases of skin issues so for some of you with serious issues, it's probably worth a shot over prescription meds. I tried it for about a week but switched back to the cheap old cream when the moisture didn't exactly last so long. I guess as a person with normal skin, I'd rather prefer to be greasy!

Should we be worried?

Certainly, the news over the past few days has been a little daunting. There are countless reports of recession, government bail outs and corporate closings. One has to wonder if we should be worried, financially speaking.

Before we go into any mass panic, I would ask you how much you are safeguarding your financial future. Are you looking ahead for times that could be potentially lean? In a church service this week, we discussed being like an eagle. The intersting thing about these birds is that they can see up to three miles ahead. That's more than amazing to me! Like an eagle, we have to see what lies ahead for us financially. We have made some attempts to diversify where our investments are, having more than one bank, etc. These things are fool proof but are an attempt to give us a little "cushion" in a financial downturn.

More than ever, I'd like to encourage you to get your house in order. It's time to start or pad your emergency fund. It's time to balance finding great deals with making your money grow. Let's be proactive, let's be eagles!

Celebrating National Coupon Month- he he

Did you know that September is National Coupon Month? I'll take any reason to celebrate the great fun I've had saving money lately~ really no cake or candles needed.

It always amazes me though, the interesting sentiments folks have about coupons in general. I read this last week that manufacturers spend something like 360 billion dollars in coupons each year, yet we consumers only redeem about 2.6 billion of what is allotted by those companies. Now call me crazy, but I ain't no fool- money is money to me, even if it comes in the form of a printed coupon. I think it's crazy that people don't save a little money here and there. I think most people think that they won't save that much or that they don't have the time. I guess I just make time since I know the tremendous benefits coupons have provided.

That's why I wrote the post I'm not ashamed to save. I've just decided that clipping coupons is worth the time and effort for me (at least right now). Well, without further ado... Happy Coupon Month to you!

Have a perscription- ways to save!

I thought that I would mention a few good deals going on right now if you have a medical prescription to fill. Any time I have one, I try to find a coupon for a gift card~ you should too.

If you have a Harris Teeter nearby they are giving away a $25 gift card with your first prescription & $10 off your grocery bill for every prescription through 9/30. With triple coupons this could go a mighty long way!

This last Sunday's paper also had a coupon inside the Target circular for a $10 prescription with any new or transferred prescription~ yippie, one of my favorite stores.

Rite Aid always has deals for a $25 or $30 gift card if you have an existing prescription transferred to one of their stores.

Certainly, if you have a recurring Rx and don't mind where you get it, try transferring your prescription to a new location each time you need it filled. You'll walk away with lots of gift cards. How exciting! I never wanted to be ill before but is it wrong to admit that deals like this make me want a prescription?!

What's a good deal worth to ya?

I have found myself asking this question a lot recently- what's a good deal really woth. The thing about deal shopping is to always understand that there is always (and I repeat) always another good deal right around the corner. Before I became really savvy with deals and coupons, I thought that deals were realy like once in a lifetime type things. Not true! With every new week, there seems to always be another way to save money, pay less, stock up, and get something for free.

So... my question to you readers then is what's a deal really worth to you? Does a good deal mean that you run out to the store the first moment it opens to catch what's on the shelves? Spend a lot of time clipping and oganizing your coupon stash? Spending time in the stores- shopping (frugally, of course!)? Perhaps this is more than worth it to you as we are in tough economic times as a nation.

As for me, I am still answering this question. I am coming to the point now where I can or cannot make a run to the store unless of course my grocery store is trippling coupons or it's something we need/ use & the price is right. I'm trying to find a balance with this great joy that I have in deal shopping. How about you- what's a good deal worth?

Learn a new language for free!

I grew up learning both English and Spanish as I spent much time with my family doing missionary work in Spanish-speaking countries. As an English speaker by nature, I can attest that learning a new language is certainly difficult. One key to success is becoming as immersed as possible. I found a fabulous site hosted by the BBC that offers free language lessons including videos & sound bites.

They have a lot of languages to choose from like French, Spanish, Portugese, Chinese (not limited to these) so if you're trying to learn a second language now's the time to get some great tools for free!
