Hi ho hi ho off to Florida I go
I am excited to be going to sunny Florida this week. I am actually headed to a conference on higher education. It will give me just the motivation I need to get this doctoral dissertation completed.
Anyway, I've prepared the weekend "Here's what I'm stirring up" post but I'm not certain of what the internet situation will be like so you may not hear from me as much other than the normal posts. Just wanted to let you know. I'll be up and running again next week.

Making it count!
I had a wonderful conversation with my dear friend this weekend. We were talking about life, about the meaning of things. We both rested in the notion that we wanted our lives to mean something, to be of inflence. So many of us do not know the ins and outs of what the future holds, but most of us have some desire for great things.
I have been thinking about our discussion as it relates to everything in my life. I want to be influential, don't you? I sincerely want my life to mean something. I feel the same way about "speaking" to each of you. My desire is that this blog becomes more than finding a great deal. I want to make it count. I'm doing my job if you are changing your life by the way you think about money, spend money, and save. I'm doing my job if you share what you learn.
Perhaps I am having a moment (have lots of those). I just want to make my life count. How about you?

I have made peace with the coupon Nazi!
A month or so ago, I read a comment from one of you about a coupon Nazi. in your store. You know what I mean. It's the "I'm gonna get you" kind of person at the check out counter that assumes because you are using coupons and getting an amazing deal, you are doing something wrong.
Well, after much tongue biting, smiles, and patience, I think I might have won over a coupon Nazi. Just in case this person frequents blogs I will refrain from telling you where. Here's what happened...
The other day, I am shopping in a certain store and she comes walking down the aisle. Uh oh, I thought, she's seen my coupons. But she smiled and asked if I had the flyer for this week's deals. Yes I did. Do you know what happened next? She informed of a great deal running that week. I couldn't believe it. Had the sky turned purple? She said that she'd been clipping coupons and had done the deal herself 5 or 6 times.
So, the lesson... hang in there fellow couponers. Even coupon Nazis come around (well hopefully anyway).

Why I'm not a huge Walgreens fan...
- Learning the Walgreens system is a little like rocket science. I'm a doctoral student. I understand difficult stuff but Walgreens registers, rebates and coupons are only understood by quantum physicists. There are really three systems to learn at Walgreens- the register rewards (which works like CVS extrabucks but expire quicker- we'll get to that later), the monthly rebate program, instant value coupons. These are of course in addition to manufacturer's coupons. This is a lot for my brain to handle!
- I don't care for the register rewards. This is my biggest draw to drugstores but I honestly don't care for the Walgreens register rewards. They expire really quick and have lots of restrictions on what they can be used to purchase. It used to be that these coupons could buy anything in the store. Not so anymore! No gift cards, stamps, and not if you have too many other coupons; some stores have limited these to one per order. Not cool.
- Walgreens is inconsistent. Say there is a fabulous buy one get one free sale this week. One store might ring the items at half price each, another might ring the first item at full price and the second at $0. It makes planning ahead of time really challenging unless you know how every individual store will work.
- Walgreens is not as coupon friendly. I understand that people ruin things for everyone by using coupons fraudulently. While some people are really excited to see you save, my local Walgreens stores have become vigilantes about everyday coupon usage. If you have a lot of them, you are suspect.
- There's a lot to learn about Walgreens crazy registers. Have you figured out that you can only use as many coupons as the number of items you are buying? If, for example, you want to use a mfg. coupon and your register reward coupon, you actually have to buy 2 items (2 coupons for 2 items). Two coupons can't be used on only 1 thing. Or have you discovered that Walgreens coupons deduct the amount of the coupon for as many items as you have? Say you have a $2 Walgreens coupon for diapers. You buy 3 packs but scan only 1 coupon. Good enough. Walgreens gave you a $6 discount ($2 for each pack you bought even though you only scanned the coupon once). With Walgreens in-ad coupons, IVCs, and other items in addition to the manufacturer's coupons, this is actually craziness.
Don't get me wrong here. I still shop at Walgreens, just not as frequently as other drugstores where I can snag similar deals. I'm not even really complaining about the store, I've just had a difficult time both with my own stores and have read so many responses from the readers on bad experiences after I posted a great deal for you. I don't want you to head out to snag a fabulous deal only to be disappointed that you first needed a physics degree to figure the deal out. Rest assured that, like anything, once you get the hang of Walgreens, it seems like nothing. For me... you know where I stand.

Do you have the stomach for this market?
My husband had a new awareness a few days back & as I ponder it more and more, I get excited....
Difficult times like the one are country is now in are extremely challenging. I can enjoy the luxury of my youth knowing that things will likely change, but such is not the case for all Americans. I, like everyone else, am very concerned for the future of our nation, my family investments, etc. But I am also secretly excited. Here's why:
Did you know that the largest birthing of millionaires in the United States was during the Great Depression? Can you believe that a time of such economic hardship would produce such a overwhelming result! Who knows? This difficult time could produce a radical blessing for you too! Here's a call to be really smart with your money, vigilant, with eyes wide open. Great opportunities are always in our midst, even in financial craziness!

Coupon tip of the week: Do Not Double Coupons
Most coupons issued to consumers via the newspaper or home mailer say "manufacturers coupon" on the top. Look closely. You will also find that 95% of the bar codes on coupons start with a 5.
On occassion you see coupons that say "do not double" or "do not triple." What you should know is that most of these coupons WILL actually double/ triple, even though it says not to. This is really important for those of you who have grocery stores that double and triple coupons.
Basically, manufacturers reimburse stores for the face value of the coupons you use. If you have a $1 off coupon from Glade, for example, Glade reimburses your grocer $1 plus a few cents for their handling your coupon. Let's say though that your store doubles coupons up to $1. You use your $1 Glade coupon and your store pays the second $1 off your order. A "do not double" on the coupon simply tells the store that if they choose to double the coupon, Glade will only reimburse them $1 not $2.
The tip: As long as your store isn't picky, coupons that start with a 5, will double and triple automatically when scanned. Coupons that begin with a 9 will not double. They are actually programmed to not double even during double/ triple sales. Nearly all coupons begin with a 5. Some coupons, especially high dollar coupons and those that are sent in the mail or found in the small blinking machines at the store will start with a 9 and won't double/ triple. Look down before heading out for your fabulous deal.

Free Sobe @ Walgreens this week
Perhaps you have already snagged your free Sobe drinks this week but just in case I thought this deserved it's own post:
This week Sobe Life waters are on sale for $1 at Walgreens. There is also a $1/2 in the Easysaver catalog found near the front of the store. The coupon says limit 2 but the register automatically takes off $0.50 for each one you buy. If you have $0.50 off coupons (found recently at CVS and Rite Aid) these are free.
I was excited; I went and got 12 this week~ all free, of course!

Deal Alert: Free stuff at Harris Teeter
I just returned from Harris Teeter (yippie!) & wanted to let you know right away about a fantastic deal going on:
Some Unilever products are on sale: Buy $15, get $5 coupon good towards your next order.
Included in the deal are Lawry's marinade, Hellmans mayo, Lipton, and Knorr rice/ pasta sides & some others but you'll have to look into that.
I bought:
- (3) Lawry's marinades (on sale buy one get one free BOGO) & used .50/1 coupons from a recent insert
- (4) Knorr rice dishes (on sale BOGO) & used .75/2 coupons from a recent insert (7/27 RP I believe)
Anyway since my Harris Teeter is tripling coupons, I paid $0.43 for three marinades & all four rice dishes were free!
But wait, the best part is that I got the $5 off coupon at the end of my order. The $15 is BEFORE coupons & VIC savings. So, I repeat I spent $0.43 & got back $5~ oh happy day!
